The Synodic and Peripheral events of the Church of Greece for the bicentenary of the commencement of the Greek Revolution will be continued during the second half of August.

Friday, August 20
At 20h the Holy Metropolitanate of Phthiotis organises an event on the topic “The touring and preaching work of Saint Cosmas of Aetolia in the enslaved Greece”.
Venue: Holy church of Saint George of Makrakomi.
Monday, August 23
In Konitsa, commencement of the events in honour of the memory of Saint Cosmas of Aetolia under the auspices of the Holy Synod and organised by the Holy Metropolitanate of Dryinoupolis, Pogoniani and Konitsa. At 19h a Polyarchieratical Solemn Vespers will be performed in the Pilgrimage holy church of Saint Cosmas of Aetolia in Konitsa.
The Holy Metropolitanate of Ierissos, the Holy Mountain and Ardamerion organises a two-day-long Symposium on Saint Cosmas of Aetolia in the Holy Monastery of Saint Cosmas in Arnaia. The central topic is “Saint Cosmas of Aetolia Inspirer of the 1821 Revolution”. Following a Solemn Vespers at 20h the 1st Part of the Symposium will take place in the Archontariki (guesthouse) of the Monastery, with Very Rev. Archimandrite Chryssostomos Maidonis and Mr Demetrios Kyrou, Classics teacher, as guest speakers.
Tuesday, August 24
In Konitsa, where a part of the relic of Saint Cosmas of Aetolia is preserved, the Holy Metropolitanates of Epirus will honour the memory of Saint Cosmas. In the church of the same name a Polyarchieratical Divine Liturgy will be performed with Most Rev. Metropolitan Kallinikos of Arta officiating as representative of the Holy Synod and Most Rev. Metropolitans Maximos of Ioannina, Chryssostomos of Nikopolis and Preveza, Kyrillos of Kifissia, Amaroussion and Oropos and the local Metropolitan Andreas of Dryinoupolis, Pogoniani and Konitsa. In the afternoon, the Holy Metropolitanates of Epirus (Ioannina, Paramythia, Arta, Preveza and Dryinoupolis) co-organise a scholarly one-day-long Conference in Ioannina on the topic “The National and Spiritual Offering of Saint Cosmas to the Struggle of the Inhabitants of Souli for Freedom”. The Conference will begin at 19h in the Archbishop Spyridon Hall of the Zossimaia Pædagogical Academy of Ioannina, with the reading out of a message from HB Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and all Greece. On the two thematic units public lectures will be delivered and a music event will follow in relation to the National Regeneration. You may wish to read the relevant timetable here.
The Holy Metropolitanate of Ierissos, the Holy Mountain and Ardamerion will honour the memory of Saint Cosmas of Aetolia by means of an Archieratical Divine Liturgy in the Katholikon of the Holy Convent of Saint Cosmas in Arnaia. The local Metropolitan Theokletos will officiate. Subsequently, the papers of the 2nd Part of the Symposium on Saint Cosmas will be delivered.
At 10h30 (following the Solemn Archieratical Divine Liturgy with Most Rev. Metropolitan Symeon of Phthiotis officiating) the Holy Metropolitanate of Phthiotis will carry out an event on the topic “Saint Cosmas of Aetolia, Teacher of the Nation” in the holy church of Saint Cosmas of Aetolia in the social housing area of Nea Magnesia, Lamia. At 20h in cooperation with the Municipality of Kammena Vourla it will carry out an anniversary event on the topic “The Battle of Vassilika” in the Square of the holy church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour in Reghini.
Wednesday, August 25
Together with the Municipality of Nafpaktia and the Regional Union of Municipalities of Western Greece the Holy Metropolitanate of Nafpaktos and Saint Vlassios co-organises a theatrical performance entitled “Cosmas of Aetolia”. The performance will be presented at 19h30 in the Ancient Theatre of Makyneia by the “Catharsis Dramatis Personarum” Theatre Workshop of Eirene Evanghelatos.
At 21h the Holy Metropolitanate of Phthiotis organises an event on the topic “In the footsteps of Father Cosmas. A theatrical approach combined with music and dancing”. Venue: “Saint Aekaterini” Camping Centre of the Holy Metropolitanate of Phthiotis.
Thursday, August 26
At 10h30 the Holy Metropolitanate of Phthiotis will perform a Memorial Service in the holy church of BVM in front of the Memorial of those fallen in the Battle of Vassilika. Subsequently, wreaths will be laid at the site of Vassilika.
Sunday, August 29
In the Holy Monastery of the Holy Forerunner of Artotina, Doris, the Holy Metropolitanate of Phokis will honour the memory of the hero Athanassios Diakos according to the following timetable:
- Archieratical Divine Liturgy with Most Rev. Metropolitan Theoktistos officiating;
- Archieratical Memorial Service for Athanassios Diakos, Martyr of the Nation;
- the Solemn Sermon of the Day to be delivered by Very Rev. Archimandrite Christodoulos Kalioglou, Hieropreacher of the Holy Metropolitanate;
- Trisaghion in memory of Athanassios Diakos before the hero’s bust and laying of a wreath.
In all these events the measures stipulated for the protection against the Coronavirus are strictly observed.
