This week too the Synodic and peripheral events of the Church of Greece for the bicentenary of the outset of the Greek Revolution of 1821 are continued.

Specifically:

Tuesday, September 14 (The Exaltation of the Holy Cross)

The Holy Metropolitanate of Halkis participated in the “Katsoneia” events organised on the island of Skiathos. The anniversary of the raising of the first flag of the Greek revolution on the island of Skiathos will also be honoured. A solemn Divine Liturgy and a Memorial Service will be performed in the holy church of the Three Hierarchs. Subsequently, a one-day-long workshop will be held on historic subjects, organised by the Municipality of Skiathos.

At 18h in the holy church of Apostles Peter and Paul in Pefki the Holy Metropolitanate of Kifissia, Amaroussion and Oropos organises an anniversary public lecture on the subject “Findings and uplifting experiences flowing from the miracle of 1821” with Very Rev. Protopresbyter Constantinos Metropoulos, Archieratical Commissioner of Kalavryta, as keynote speaker.

The Holy Metropolitanate of Monemvassia and Sparta will honour the memory of those fallen in the Holocaust of Vrodamas (on September 15, 1825, the 400 inhabitants of Vrodamas were burnt alive inside a cave at the order of Ibrahim). At 18h a solemn Vespers will be performed in Palaiomonastiro (Holy Monastery of the Holy Forty Martyrs). At 21h in the central square of Vrodamas the busts of Father Demetrios and Ghiannakis Karabas will be unveiled.


Wednesday, September 15

In cooperation with the Municipality of Evrotas the Holy Metropolitanate of Monemvassia and Sparta continues the events of honour and commemoration of the Holocaust of Vrodamas. In the holy church of Palaiomonastiro constructed inside a cave clergymen of the Holy Metropolitanate will perform a Divine Liturgy and a Memorial Service for those fallen, followed by a Doxology and the laying of wreaths.

At 18h in the holy church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Pefki the Holy Metropolitanate of Kifissia, Amaroussion and Oropos organises an anniversary on the subject “What the Neomartyrs offered to the enslaved nation” with Very Rev. Archimandrite Anthimos Papalexopoulos, Hegumen of the Holy Monastery of BVM the Source of Universal Joy in Kalentzi of Corinthia and Hieropreacher of the Holy Metropolitanate of Corinth, as keynote speaker.


Thursday, September 16

At 19h in the courtyard of the holy church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Pefki the Holy Metropolitanate of Kifissia, Amaroussion and Oropos organises an anniversary event on the subject “Saint Gregory V, Patriarch of Constantinople” with the local Metropolitan Most Rev. Kyrillos addressing the audience and Father Christos Kyriakopoulos, Archieratical Commissioner of the Metropolitanate as keynote speaker, followed by a programme of traditional dances from all around Greece by the “Echagogos” ensemble.

Friday, September 17

Following a Divine Liturgy, with Most Rev. Metropolitan Symeon of Phthiotis officiating, at 10h30 in the Cultural Centre of the holy church of Saint Sophia in Lamia the Holy Metropolitanate of Phthiotis will carry out an event on the subject “The contribution of the Greeks of Odessa to the Revolution of 1821”.

The Holy Metropolitanate of Kifissia, Amaroussion and Oropos will perform a Holy Unction before the relic of the head of the Neomartyr Saint Helen of Sinope followed by a public lecture to be delivered by Very Rev. Archimandrite Athanassios Detsikas on the subject “Saint Cosmas of Aetolia Equal to the Apostles”.

Sunday, September 19

The Holy Metropolitanate of Triphylia and Olympia will honour the memory of the fighters of 1821 Ghiannakis Gridzalis and Demetrios Metropetrovas in the village of Psari of Triphylia. A Divine Liturgy and A Trisaghion will be performed for the rest of the soul of the heroes, followed by a public lecture about the patriotic action of the two fighters.

At 19h in cooperation with the Municipality of Sophades and the Cultural Association of Sophades, the Holy Metropolitanate of Thessaliotis and Phanariofersala organises a one-day-long workshop on the subject “Struggles of Freedom, witnesses of faith: the Neomartyrs from Thessaly” with three specialised scholars delivering as many public lectures.

The Holy Metropolitanate of Nikopolis and Preveza will honour the women of ouli who fell in Zalongo, in an event with a rich timetable as follows:

  • At 07h a.m. an Archieratical Divine Liturgy will be performed in the Holy Monastery of Saint Demetrios in Zalongo, with Most Rev. Metropolitan Chryssostomos of Nikopolis and Preveza officiating, as well as a Memorial Service for the rest of the souls of the women of Souli who fell from the rock of Zalongo.
  • At 19h in the outer space of the Holy Monastery of Saint Demetrios in Zalongo an event will be carried out under the title “Zalongo: a threshing floor for a dance of freedom and sacrifice”. This commemorative event in honour and memory of the sacrifice of the women of Souli (1803) comprises a rich music and literary tour of the history of Souli and the brave sacrifice of the women of Souli who threw themselves from the rock of Zalongo: ecclesiastical hymns, a public lecture, and folk historic songs from Souli accompanied by an instrumental ensemble.

In all the events the measures stipulated for the protection from the Coronavirus pandemic are observed.
