On July 23, 1821, following many days of siege, the Greeks liberated Monemvassia with its famous castle on the rock. Negotiations took place for the surrender of the besieged Turks, who were transferred to Asia Minor. The liberation boosted the morale of the rebelling Greeks, as Monemvassia was the first important fortress to fall into their hands.
