Interview of the Most Rev. Metropolitan Ignatios of Nafpaktos and Saint Vlassios
to the 89.5FM Radio Station of the Church of Greece

On Wednesday, February 17, 2021, within the framework of a second part of a special programme of the Radio Station of the Church of Greece dedicated to the bicentenary of the Revolution and in the series entitled “From the Fall of Constantinople to the Revolution of 1821”, the Most Rev. Metropolitan Ierotheos of Nafpaktos and Saint Vlassios discussed the subject “The Division of the Nation: ethnarchy, nation, regrouping” with the journalist Ms Katerina Houzouri.

In this programme the following subjects were discussed:

  • the state of the nation and of the Church prior to the Fall of the Constantinople in 1453;
  • how the Empire treated the danger from the East;
  • what was offered by the first Patriarch after the Fall, Ghennadios Scholarios;
  • the significant work of the Patriarchate during servitude;
  • the attitude of the Patriarchate to the Latins and the Lutherans;
  • how the Orthodox Church addressed the issue of western missionaries;
  • the current of the Enlightenment and the attitude of the Church;
  • the division of the nation following the Revolution of 1821.

Despite the limited time, this discussion raised some key issues which highlight what the Orthodox Church offered throughout that difficult period and finally demonstrate that the so-called anti-Union party preserved the entire tradition of our Nation from destruction during that dark period.
