This week too the Synodic and peripheral events of the Church of Greece in honour of the bicentenary of the beginning of the Greek Revolution are continued.

Specifically :

On Monday, October 18:

At 18h and in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Demetrios of Halkis a celebratory event on the subject “1821 in Eubœa and the Northern Sporades” will be held. A public lecture to be delivered by a teacher, topical songs to be performed by Greek musicians, and relevant texts to be read out by a journalist, who will also be the presenter, will constitute this event.

At 20h the Holy Metropolitanate of Phthiotis organises an event in the Cultural Centre of the Holy Metropolitan Cathedral of the Annunciation to BVM in Lamia on the subject “The trial of the heroes Kolokotronis and Plapoutas”.

On Wednesday, October 20:

The Holy Metropolitanate of Messenia participates in the celebratory events of the Region of the Peloponnese and the Municipality of Pylos – Nestor for the 194th anniversary of the Naval Battle of Lepanto.

The events will take place in the town of Pylos, with H.E. the President of the Hellenic Republic Ms Aikaterini Sakellaropoulou and Most Rev. Metropolitan Constantinos of Megara and Salamis as representative of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece attending.

On the same day the events of the Holy Metropolitanate of Monemvassia and Sparta will commence in honour of the Neomartyr Saint Ioannis from Monemvassia. In the afternoon Most Rev. Metropolitan Eustathios of Monemvassia and Sparta will perform a Solemn Vespers and a procession of the holy relics in the church bearing the name of the Saint in the village of Gouvies.

The catechetical schools and the Youth Office of the Metropolitanate, whose patron saint is the Neomartyr Saint Ioannis, will participate in the events.

On Thursday, October 21:

On the feast day of the Neomartyr Saint Ioannis from Monemvassia Most Rev. Metropolitan Eustathios of Monemvassia and Sparta will officiate in a Solemn Divine Liturgy in the holy church of the Saint in the parish of Gheraki, place of origin of the family of the Neomartyr.

On the same day at 18h a Scholarly Conference in honour of the Neomartyrs of our nation will be held within the framework of the events organised by the Holy Metropolitanate of Larissa and Tyrnavos in cooperation with the regional educational authority for the bicentenary of the beginning of the Greek Revolution. Four eminent Greek academics will deliver relevant lectures and Most Rev. Metropolitan Ieronymos of Larissa and Tyrnavos as well as representatives of the local educational administration will address the audience. During the same event the pupils distinguished in school contests on the topic “200 years since the Greek Revolution – Honouring the Thessalian Neomartyrs of 1821” will be awarded their prizes.

The Conference will be moderated by Protosynkellos Father Ignatios Mourtzanos, head of the Office of Cultural Identity of the Metropolitanate of Larissa and Tyrnavos.
