On September 23, 1821, the Greeks enter Tripolis triumphantly, a town known at the time as Tripolitsa or Tripoliçe (its Ottoman name), administrative centre of the Peloponnese (Morea Eyalet) and seat of the Ottoman governor of Morea, who had the title of Mora valesi. It is an undoubted strategic success of Theodoros Kolokotronis, who had organised the siege and won battles around the town.
The term “capture” instead of “liberation” of Tripoliçe was used because the Greek besiegers at that time considered the town Turkish.
