In order to pay the tribute due to the memory of the Fighters of the Greek Revolution of 1821 and given the particular significance of the anniversary year 2021, the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece announces the Timetable of the festive events planned to take place during the month of March by the local Holy Metropolitanates.

APRIL 1, 2021

_11h00 | The holy church of Saint Demetrios of Arms of the Holy Archdiocese of Athens celebrates the miracle of Saint Demetrios performed on the night of the 31st of March to the 1st of April, 1821, in the old church.

Specifically, the warlord Meletis (Hadzi)Vassileiou with his entourage, loaded with weapons, which they would transfer to Hassia (Phyle) to arm the revolutionaries of Hassia, spent the night of the 31st of March inside the church of Saint Demetrios. There he heard a voice coming from the icon of the Saint commanding him “To arms!”. He woke up tormented and, taking it for a miracle and a warning, he ordered his soldiers to load the weapons immediately on the pack animals and get going. This was what they did, and the Turks were thus unable to overtake them, as they intended to confiscate those weapons. Since that time, the church was named “Saint Demetrios of Arms”. The intervention of the Saint in the area of the old church worked like a catalyst for the liberation of the city of Athens.
This is the reason why, on Wednesday, March 31, the Services of the Matins of the feast of the Miracle of Saint Demetrios and of the Hours were chanted, and subsequently the Holy Mass of the Presanctified was performed, from 17h30 to 20h30. On Thursday, April 1, at 11h00, a Doxology was performed, with His Grace Bishop Philotheos of Rogai officiating, in commemoration of the miracle performed and of the outset of the Revolution in Attica.

The services of worship were carried out without the presence of faithful. Further information on their online broadcasting see on the web page of the holy church at www.agdimitriosoplon.infο.
