In the context of anniversary events on the occasion of the completion of 200 years since the outset of the Greek Revolution, on Saturday, January 30, 2021, the Holy Metropolitanate of Messenia organizes a scholarly one-day Conference on the subject of

“The declaration of the Messenian Senate to the European Courts: Assessing its significance today”.

Two University teachers will offer their interpretations:
a) “The incomplete 1821. Thoughts about the 200 years following the declaration of the Messenian Senate” to be delivered by Mr Gheorghios Steiris, Associate Professor of Philosophy at the National Kapodistrian University of Athens, and

  1. b)“The declaration of the Messenian Senate and the world of political ideas”, to be delivered by Mr Evanthis Hadzivassileiou, Professor of History at the same University.

Because of the restrictive measures the Conference will be broadcast online at 17h on the YouTube channel of the Holy Metropolitanate under the title “Holy Metropolitanate of Messenia – Celebration of the Bicentenary”.

In the morning of Saturday, January 30, 2021, those who wish may watch a live broadcast from the Holy Church of the AllGreatest Taxiarchs of Kalamata:

  • of the Solemn Divine Liturgy of the Feast of the Three Hierarchs;
  • of the Memorial Service of the Messenian Teachers of the Nation; and

of the Panegyric for the day, to be delivered by Ms Ioanna Sophianopoulou, theologian – philologist, M.Sc. in Theology, and doctoral candidate in Byzantine History, on the subject of “The contribution of the Church to the education of the enslaved Hellenism during the Turkish Rule (the ‘secret school’ and the teachers of the Nation)”.
