The Holy Synod of the Church of Greece and the local Holy Metropolitanates continue the anniversary events during this week, too, for the celebration of the bicentenary of the commencement of the Greek Revolution of 1821.

Specifically, on Saturday, April 17 :

The Holy Metropolitanate of Nafpaktos and Saint Vlassios will perform a Doxology in the Holy Cathedral of Saint Demetrios of Nafpaktos for the anniversary of the Liberation of the town, with Most Rev. Metropolitan Ierotheos of Nafpaktos and Saint Vlassios officiating.

The Holy Metropolitanate of Phthiotis will organize an online lecture on the subject of “The outbreak of the Greek Revolution in Moldowallachia”. The lecture will be broadcast at 18h00 from the website of the Metropolitanate (www.imfth.gr).

Saturday and Sunday, 17 & 18 :

Under the auspices of the Holy Synod, the Holy Metropolitanate of Didymoteichon, Orestias and Souflion_organises anniversary events during these two days, with particular emphasis on the contribution of the Thracians to the Liberation Struggle of 1821 and with Saint Hieromartyr Patriarch Kyrillos VI (1813-1818) as personality of honour, who, on April 18, 1821, was executed by hanging in Adrianople, having been accused by the Sublime Porte, just as his successor Gregorios V (1818-1821), of aiding and abetting the work of the “Society of Friends”.

On April 17,  2021, at 18h00, an online scholarly One-Day Conference will be carried out on the subject of “The contribution of Thrace to the Liberation Struggle of 1821”.

On Sunday, April 18, day of memory of Saint Kyrillos VI, a Polyarchieratical Divine Liturgy will be performed in the Holy Cathedral of Saints Theodoroi of Orestias, with Most Rev. Metropolitan Panteleimon of Xanthi and Peritheorion officiating as representative of the Holy Synod. The Most Rev. Metropolitans Anthimos of Alexandroupolis, Panteleimon of Maroneia and Komotini, and Damaskinos of Didymoteichon, Orestias and Souflion will be co-officiating.
At 11h00 a Scholarly One-Day Conference, dedicated to the personality and the sacrifice of Saint Kyrillos VI, will be carried out and will be broadcast from local TV channels.

On the same day, Sunday, April 18, at 19h00 , an online Conference will be carried out on the subject of “The contribution of Patriarch VI to the simplification of the notation of Byzantine music”. In all three scholarly One-Day Conferences, for which representatives from all the Metropolitanates of Thrace have been designated, Mr Manolis Varvounis, Professor of Folklore at the Democritean University of Thrace, Chairman of the Scholarly Committee on the organization of the Scholarly Conferences of the Holy Synod dedicated to the Revolution of 1821.
