The 7th anniversary event of the Holy Metropolitanate of Phthiotis in honour of 1821 was also carried out online

The 7th anniversary event of the Holy Metropolitanate of Phthiotis in honour of the Greek Revolution was conducted successfully in the historical parish of Saints Theodoroi of Lamia, on the subject “The years of slavery – The Turkish Rule”.

The event was presented by the vicar of the Holy Church of Saints Theodoroi, Father Constantinos Papastamatis.

The keynote lecture, on the subject “The years of slavery – The Turkish Rule” was vividly delivered, on the basis of sources, by Mr Evanghelos Pehas, retired schoolteacher of Greek language and history and Protopsaltis of the Holy Church.

A delegation of children from the Catechetical School of the parish, in the care of their instructors – Catechists and with all the required healthcare measures fully observed, presented to the public a series of poems online related to the songs, the preoccupations and the vision of our ancestors, of our Nation. They also presented a brief theatrical sketch referring to the Christian faith of the heroes and fighters of 1821 and to their desire of freedom.

The successful anniversary event was declared closed by Most Rev. Metropolitan Symeon of Phthiotis, who, surrounded by the children, tellingly emphasized, in his address, that “The journey of our anniversary events has many destinations, many persons travelling together and also showing us the way. Today our journey made a stop at the historical parish of Saints Theodoroi in the city of Lamia, on the road of the churches, and our main fellow travelers were the children of the parish, who sent out messages taking us not to yesterday but to tomorrow.

We wish this feast, this fair, the fair of 1821, to become a fair of 2021, as long as we keep our promise to the children, if they show us the way and pave the ground, to us adults.  The blood spilled in 1821, the fight that was fought, the martyrdom and the testimony of Greek patriotism, all that was offered so that this land may have a future, an Orthodox, Greek, Christian future.

This is the aim of our events: we trace a path to the future. This is why I would like wholeheartedly to congratulate you who are with us, despite the adversities of the pandemic, online, or through your TV screens. Please stay tuned with us for every such event, wherever we may find ourselves, and may this be soon through physical presence. This is what we hope for, that the pandemic may pass so that we may be able to meet in heroic sites, with beloved persons”.
