Under the auspices of the Holy Synod, the Holy Metropolitanate of Piraeus will honour the memory of Gheorghios Karaiskakis, who died on April 23, 1827, after being fatally wounded on April 22, in today’s area of Neo Phalero. Specifically, at 11h00 a Trisagion will be performed in memory of the hero before his monument in Neo Phalero (in front of the “Gheorghios Karaiskakis” Stadium). The Trisagion will be performed by Most Rev. Metropolitan Serapheim of Piraeus and a few representatives of the local authorities have been invited to attend. At 18h00 a Scholarly One-day Conference of the Holy Metropolitanate of Piraeus will follow on the subject of “the battle of Athens, with emphasis on the contribution of Gheorghios Karaiskakis and Ioannis Makriyannis”. The One-day Conference will begin with an address by Most Rev. Metropolitan Serapheim of Piraeus.

Papers will be delivered by Mr Constantinos Holevas, Political Scientist and writer, Mr Haralambos Minaoglou, Ph.D. in Modern History and Principal of the senior grades of the High-school of the Ionideios Model School, and Mr Stephanos Milessis, History researcher. The Very Rev. Archimandrite Father Nephon Kapoghiannis, Protosynkellos of the Holy Metropolitanate of Piraeus, will coordinate the event.

Saturday and Sunday, April 24 and 25

The Holy Metropolitanate of Aetolia and Akarnania will honour the heroic Exodus of Missolonghi (April 1826) as follows:

More specifically, on Saturday, April 24, with a Vespers, and a lecture by Mr Constantinos Lyros, Mayor of the Holy City of Missolonghi, in the Holy Cathedral of Saint Spyridon of Missolonghi.

A representation of the Exodus will follow, to be broadcast online and with all the healthcare restrictions strictly observed.

On Sunday, April 25, at 10h00, Most Rev. Cosmas of Aetolia and Akarnania will officiate at a Doxology for the Day of Commemoration of the Exodus of Missolonghi, in the presence of HE Ms Aekaterini Sakellaropoulou, President of the Hellenic Republic. Subsequently, HE the President will lay a wreath in the Garden of Heroes. There will be a televised broadcast.

During the Doxology, a message by HB Archbishop Ieronymos II of Athens and all Greece, President of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, will be read out.
