This week too the anniversary and celebratory events of the Holy Synod and the Holy Metropolitanates of the Church of Greece for the bicentenary of the outset of the Greek Revolution of 1821 will be continued.

Specifically:

  • On June 29, 30 and July 1, the Holy Metropolitanate of Thessaliotis and Phanariophersala co-organises and participates in the scholarly Conference on Gheorghios Karaiskakis, organised by the Municipality of Mouzaki of Karditsa.

  • On Wednesday, June 30, at 21h00, the Holy Metropolitanate of Phthiotis organises an event on the beach of Glypha of Pelasghia on the topic of “Fire men of the sea”. The event will be recorded and broadcast from the website of the Metropolitanate.

 

On Friday, July 2 to Sunday, July 4:

Together with the Municipality of Lefkas and local associations, the Holy Metropolitanate of Lefkas and Ithaca co-organises a scholarly conference on the topic “Where it all began – In Maghemenos’ 1807” .

  • The Holy Metropolitanate of Kalavryta and Aeghialeia, the Municipality of Kalavryta and the Pankalavrytian Association organise a two-day-long scholarly conference for the bicentenary of the 1821 Revolution. The conference itself will take place in the central square of Kalavryta (“Petrino” Hall) on Friday 2 and Saturday 3 and on Sunday, July 4, in the Holy Monastery of Megalo Spelaio, there will be a celebration of the anniversary of the victorious battle of Megalo Spelaio on June 24, 1827.

On Saturday, July 3:

  • The Holy Metropolitanate of Cephalonia organises a one-day workshop on the Fall of Constantinople and the Uprising of 1821. The workshop will be carried out at 20h00 in the open-air theatre of Argostoli. A concert will follow by the “En Hordais” ensemble with folk songs referring to Asia Minor, Constantinople and the 1821 Revolution.
  • The Holy Metropolitanate of Lefkas continues the three-day-long celebration. At 11h00 a Doxology will be chanted in the historical chapel of BVM of Vlahernai in Campos of Lefkas, where the Great Archpriest Zacharias Montesanto swore in the members of the Society of Friends and the chieftains of Western Sterea Hellas, Epirus and Lefkas on Carnival Sunday, January 30, 1821.

 On Sunday, July 4:

  • The Holy Metropolitanate of Lefkas and Ithaca will perform an Archieratical co-celebration of Divine Liturgy in the holy Cathedral of the Annunciation of Lefkas, where the Gospel of the Members of the Society of Friends will be venerated. Subsequently, at 12h00 m., a memorial service will be chanted, wreaths will be laid, and a celebratory event will be carried out on the “Maghemenou” site in the area of Nikiana, where the klephts and the Greek Christian militia met with Ioannis Capodistrias and Bishops in 1807 so as to organise the defence of Lefkas during its siege by Ali Pasha.
  • In the afternoon, the Holy Metropolitanate of Mytilene will perform a memorial service before the monument erected in honour of those who took part in the setting of a Turkish warship on fire by Papanikolis on May 27, 1821, with Most Rev. Metropolitan Iakovos of Mytilene officiating. A lecture will follow by Protopresbyter FATHER Athanassios Ghiousmas on the subject “From the capture of Lesvos by the Turks to the setting of the Turkish warship on fire off Eressos of Lesvos in 1821”.
