On the occasion of the celebration of the bicentenary of the outbreak of the Greek Revolution, continuing the implementation of the anniversary events planned, on Saturday, May 29, 2021, at 1800h the Holy Metropolitanate of Messenia presents a scholarly one-day conference as planned, on the topic of “What Orthodox Monasticism offered to the education and culture of the Nation, with particular emphasis on Messenia”.

Two experts will speak of the specific topic:

a) Mr Nikolaos Tombros, Assistant Professor of Political History in the Military Academy of the Evelpids (Cadets), on the subject “The contribution of the Monasteries of Greece, and of those of Messenia in particular, to the 1821 Revolution”;

and b) Mr Ioannis Bougas, theologian, Ph.D. in Contemporary Greek History and Philosophy, on the subject “What the Monasteries of Messenia offered to the learning of the Greeks during the 1821 Revolution and after it”.

Because of the restrictive measures, the one-day conference will be broadcast online from the YouTube channel of the Holy Metropolitanate under the title: Holy Metropolitanate of Messenia – Celebration of 200 years.

Contributing to the preservation of the memory of the historical event of the Fall of Constantinople, he Holy Metropolitanate of Messenia organizes the online concert under the title “They snatched our City”, to be broadcast on the day of commemoration of the Fall, the 29th of May. The broadcast will be possible from 11 a.m. of May 29, 2021, through the YouTube channel of the Holy Metropolitanate, under the title “Holy Metropolitanate of Messenia – Celebration of 200 years”.

On May 29, 2021, the Holy Metropolitanate of Phthiotis will perform an Archieratical Divine Liturgy in the holy church of Saint Panteleimon in Kammena Vourla, after the end of which an event will take place in the courtyard of the church, on the subject “From the Fall to the Revolution”. Most Rev. Metropolitan Symeon of Phthiotis will officiate in the Divine Liturgy. It will be broadcast from the website of the Metropolitanate.

The Holy Metropolitanate of Mantineia and Kynouria will honour the anniversary of 200 years of the historical Assembly of Plenipotentiaries of the Peloponnese in the Holy Monastery of Saint Nicholas of Kaltezes. On Saturday, May 29, 2021, at 18h Most Rev. Metropolitan Alexandros of Mantineia and Kynouria will officiate in the Vespers to be performed in the open air and will perform a Memorial Service for the rest of the souls of the members of the Assembly. This will be preceded by the reception ceremony of the Revolution standard of Aghia Lavra in the area of the Holy Monastery of Kaltezes.

On Sunday, May 30, 2021, the Holy Metropoltanate of Mantineia and Kynouria will continue the anniversary events in the Holy Monastery of Saint Nicholas of Kaltezes where the Assembly of the Peloponnesians in May 1821. In the Polyarchieratical Divine Liturgy in the open air His Beatitude Archbishop Ieronymos II of Athens and all Greece. Subsequently Professor Athanassios Christou will speak of the significance of the Assembly in Kaltezes. A dinner will be extended to all the pilgrims of the Monastery.

The Holy Metropolitanate of Paramythia, Philiates, Gheromerion and Parga, in cooperation with the Regional Uniot of Thesprotia, will honour the struggles of the Souliots and those fallen in the historical Kounghi. The President of the Hellenic Republic will honour the events by attending. At 11h30 a.m. of Sunday, May 30, 2021, Most Rev. Metropolitan Titos of Paramythia will perform the Doxology in the holy church of Saints Constantine and Helen in the historical site of Souli without the presence of pilgrims. Subsequently, the Most Rev. Metropolitan will perform a Memorial Service at the Memorial of the Souliots in front of the Assembly House. A wreath will be laid at the Memorial by HE the President of the Republic.

On the same day at 19h the Holy Metropolitanate of Phthiotis will organize a Youth Feast in the Auditorium of the Administrative and Cultural Centre of the Metropolitanate in Lamia. The central topic will be “1821 as a source of inspiration of the great Struggles for faith and fatherland”.
