Mouzaki, June 29 – July 1, 2021 | A great Conference on the subject “Gheorghios Karaiskakis and his time”

A Conference on the subject “Gheorghios Karaiskakis and his time” to be carried out on June 29 and 30 and July 1, 2021, and co-organised by the Municipality of Mouzaki, the Union of Cultural Associations of the Prefecture of Karditsa, the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Region of Thessaly – Regional Unit of Karditsa and the Holy Metropolitanate of Thessaliotis and Phanariofersala, under the auspices of the Hellenic Parliament and the Ministry of Culture and Sports, is expected with particular interest.

The Conference, to take place in a hotel in Mouzaki, will include 46 papers to be delivered by authoritative speakers from all around Greece on aspects of the personality of Gheorghios Karaiskakis, great hero of the Greek Revolution, born in Mavrommati of Karditsa, as well as of the entire time period of the Struggle of Independence, and more specifically, the state of Karaiskakis’ health, his battles, unknown facets of his action, analyses based on the Press and archival material. Moreover, the influence of his figure on popular tradition, the popular culture of the Inter-War period and today’s digital era, as well as on many forms of modern Greek art such as visual arts, theatre, poetry and fiction. At the same time, his son Spyridon and his grandson Gheorghios Karaiskakis, MP for Karditsa, will be biographed.

The opening of the proceedings of the Conference will take place on Tuesday, June 29, 2021, at 19h15, with addresses by state officials. The first three papers of the Conference will follow (opening session) and the evening will be closed with a discussion.

On Wednesday, June 30 and Thursday, July 1, the sessions will start at 09h00. At the end of the Conference, the chairman of the scholarly committee, Mr Antonis Antoniou, will summarise the conclusions of the conference and a discussion will follow.

All the papers and the conclusions will be included in a volume of Proceedings to be published soon with a view to constituting a useful tool of research and knowledge as well as an important legacy for the generations to come. It is worth noting that this is the first time that a conference is organised on Gheorghios Karaiskakis at such a high level with the participation of so important bodies and speakers and it has already attracted widespread interest throughout Greece.
