Upon the completion of 200 years since the commencement of the Greek Revolution of 1821, under the auspices of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, the Holy Metropolitanate of Chios, Psara and Oinoussa, Most Rev. Metropolitan Markos of Hios, Psara and Oinoussai, accompanied by Rev. Archdeacon Father Apostolos Lardas proceeded to the Municipal Garden of Hios and performed a Memorial Service before the statue of the heroic sea fighter and fire ship captain Constantinos Kanaris, where he laid a wreath.
The Most Rev. Metropolitan emphasized that “the exploit of Kanaris saved the Revolution in its beginnings” as well as that the sea always played an important part in the upbringing of those born and educated on the islands of the Eastern Aegean.
