The Synodic and peripheral events of the Church of Greece in honour of the bicentenary of the Greek Revolution of 1821 are continued.

Specifically:

Wednesday, August 4 :
At 19h the Holy Metropolitanate of Samos and Ikaria organised a Scholarly Conference in Pythagoreion, Samos, the place where the Revolution of the Samiots began in 1821, on the topic “Samos in the Greek Revolution of 1821”. You may wish to look at the detailed timetable here.
Despite the accident of Most Rev. Metropolitan Eusebios of Samos and Ikaria, the events from August 4 to 7 will take place as planned.

Thursday, August 5 :
The Holy Metropolitanate of Samos and Ikaria will perform a Solemn Archieratical Vespers in the holy church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour in Pythagoreion, Samos, with Most Rev. Metropolitan Ignatios of Demetrias and Almyros officiating as representative of the Holy Synod.

Friday, August 6 :
The Holy Metropolitanate of Samos and Ikaria will perform a Solemn Divine Liturgy in the holy church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour in Pythagoreion, Samos, with Most Rev. Metropolitan Ignatios of Demetrias and Almyros officiating as representative of the Holy Synod.

At 20h00 the Holy Metropolitanate of Phthiotis will organise an event in the Holy Monastery of Dadi on the subject “The battle of the Monastery of Dadi – A dramatic reconstruction of the battle”, in cooperation with the Municipality of Amphikleia-Elateia.

Saturday, August 7 :
At 19h the Holy Metropolitanate of Samos and Ikaria will organise an event (a one-day Conference and a concert) in Karlovassi, Samos, on the subject “Gheorghios Kleanthis, the animate trumpet of the Revolution of Samos”. You may wish to look at the detailed timetable here.

The Holy Metropolitanate of Monemvassia and Sparta will perform a Vespers with Artoklasia (“breaking of Bread”) in the holy church of the Dormition of the Theotokos of the village of Chryssapha, for the health of the Chryssahiots around the world, as well as the Holy Paraclesis to BVM.

At 20h30 the Holy Metropolitanate of Phthiotis organises an event in the Holy Monastery of Agathon on the subject “Learning and letters in the years of the Turkish Rule”.

Sunday, August 8 :
The Holy Metropolitanate of Monemvassia and Sparta will honour the memory of the late fighter Metropolitan Ignatios of Hungary-Wallachia, who hailed from the village of Chryssapha, Lakonia. The local Metropolitan Eustathios will officiate in the Divine Liturgy and will perform an Archieratical Memorial Service in the holy churcj of the Dormition of the Theotokos of Chryssapha for the rest of the soul of the late Metropolitan Ignatios. A bust of the Hierarch honoured will be unveiled, as he offered greatly to the Struggle of 1821. Regarding the national action of Ignatios of Hungary-Wallachia, Mr Nikolaos Koufos, retired teacher and theologian, will deliver a public lecture.  

The Holy Metropolitanate of Phokis will honour the late General Ioannis Makriyannis, fighter of 1821 and writer of Memoirs, through the following timetable of events :
– an archieratical Divine Liturgy in the holy church of Saint George of Krokyleion of Doris, with Most Rev. Metropolitan Theoktistos of Phokis officiating;
– an archieratical Memorial Service in honour of the late hero of the Revolution Ioannis Makriyannis;
– a Solemn Public Lecture of the day, which will be delivered by Very Rev. Archimandrite Father Nektarios Moulatsiotis, Protosynkellos of the Holy Metropolitanate;
– following the Divine Liturgy, a Trisaghion in memory of Ioannis Makriyannis before the bust of the hero and laying of wreaths.

At 11h, immediately after an Archieratical Divine Liturgy in the Byzantine holy church of Saint Demetrios of Mavrilo of Makrakomi the Holy Metropolitanate of Phthiotis will organise an event on the subject “Ainianes – Baroutomyloi – Mavrilo”.

At 20h, in the central square of Rapsani, the Holy Metropolitanate of Larissa and Tyrnavos will organise an event on the subject “Neomartyrs and Logades: the soul of the nation”.

At 21h the Holy Metropolitanate of Kerkyra organises an event on the paved area of Saint Spyridon – Square of the Heroes of the Cypriot Struggle (in front of the church of BVM of the Strangers). Specifically, the Cultural Hearth of Kerkyra will present an anniversary musical and literary programme on the topic “From darkness to freedom”. Extracts from works relevant to the Revolution will be read out (such as Solomos, Kolokotronis, Makriyannis, Petsalis-Diomidis, Peranthis), while songs about the Struggle and later poetry about the Revolution will be rendered musically. Narrators, singers, and musicians will contribute to the event, artistically supervised by Mr Ghiorgos Ladovrechis. All may attend free of charge.

Wednesday, August 11 :
The Holy Metropolitanate of Kerkyra, Paxoi and the Diapontian Islands will honour the anniversary of the miraculous intervention of Saint Spyridon, who saved Kerkyra on August 11, 1716, from a siege of the Turks.

In the holy church of Saint Spyridon in the city of Kerkyra an Archieratical Divine Liturgy will be performed, with Most Rev. Metropolitan Nektarios of Kerkyra officiating. The holy relic of Saint Spyridon will remain upright for veneration by the faithful for three days until the afternoon of Friday, August 23 (the “Re-entrance” of the Saint).

Thursday, August 12 :
At 21h in Antirrion the Holy Metropolitanate of Nafpaktos organises an open-air concert of the Foundation of Music of the Holy Archdiocese of Athens on the subject “Figures of Clergymen who fought, struggled and sacrificed themselves for the preparation and the Struggle for Freedom in Greece and Europe”.  

Friday, August 13 :
Within the framework of the Theometorika events, in the conference hall of the Holy Cathedral of Hydra, at 20h30, the Holy Metropolitanate of Hydra, Spetses and Aeghina will organise a public lecture by Very Rev. Archimandrite Father Vartholomaios Antoniou-Triantaphyllides, Secretary of the Special Synodic Committee on Cultural Identity, on the subject “The Most Holy Theotokos, Protectress of the Christians, Protectress of the Greeks”. Prior to the lecture a Vespers and a Paraclesis to BVM will be performed in the Cathedral of Hydra, with Most Rev. Metropolitan Ephraim of Hydra, Spetses and Aeghina officiating.

At 20h, following the Paraclesis in the holy church of Saint George of Mendenitsa, the Holy Metropolitanate of Phthiotis will organise an event on the subject “Mendenitsa in the Revolution of 1821” in cooperation with the Municipality of Mendenitsa and the Initiative to Highlight the History of Mendenitsa.

Sunday, August 15 (Dormition of the Theotokos) :
The Most Rev. Metropolitan of Phthiotis will officiate in the holy church of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Tithorea (Velitsa). At 11h a public lecture will follow, on the subject “Odysseas Androutsos, Fighter of the Revolution”.

Monday, August 16 :
At 20h the Holy Metropolitanate of Paronaxia will organise an event in honour of the late heroine Mando Mavroghenous in the courtyard of the holy Site of Pilgrimage of BVM the Ekatontapyliani of Paros. The topic of the event will be “The Parian heroine Mando Mavroghenous and her contribution to the Struggle of 1821”, with two ladies, a theologian and a literature teacher, delivering public lectures in her memory. Prior to the lectures Most Rev. Metropolitan Kallinikos of Paronaxia will perform a Memorial Service for the rest of the soul of the heroine honoured. You may wish to look at a relevant video here.

At 20h the Holy Metropolitanate of Phthiotis will organise an anniversary event in the Holy Monastery of Damasta on the subject “The faith of the rebelling Greeks in the Blessed Virgin Mary”, with a public lecture to be delivered by Mr Constantinos Holevas, Political Scientist and writer.
