This week, too, the Synodic and peripheral events of the Church of Greece for the bicentenary of the 1821 Greek Revolution will be continued.

Specifically:

Saturday, September 4
The Holy Metropolitanate of Ierissos, Mount Athos and Ardamerion will honour those who took part and fell heroically during the Revolution in Halkidiki in 1821. At 19h30 an anniversary event will be held in the courtyard of the holy church of Saint Nicholas of Ierissos and will include:

  • a public lecture to be delivered by Prof. Michael Tritos of the Faculty of Theology of the University of Thessaloniki on the subject of “What the Neomartyrs offered to the enslaved Nation”;
  • A music and dance performance by a Byzantine choir accompanied by traditional instruments;
  • traditional folk dances by a local group.

Sunday, September 5
The Holy Metropolitanate of Ierissos, Mount Athos and Ardamerion will perform a Polyarchieratical Divine Liturgy in the holy church of Saint Nicholas of Ierissos, with Most Rev. Metropolitan Nikodemos of Kassandreia officiating in the capacity of representative of the Holy Synod, and Most Rev. Metropolitans Panteleimon of Maroneia and Theokletos of Ierissos, Mount Athos and Ardamerion. The memory of the inhabitants of Halkidiki who were slaughtered or tortured to death by the Ottomans during the 1821 Revolution will be honoured.

Monday, September 6
The Holy Metropolitanate of Thebes and Levadeia will honour the memory of the National Martyr Bishop Isaiah of Salona with HB Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and all Greece and former President of the Hellenic Republic Mr Prokopios Pavlopoulos attending.

Specifically, at 18h a Vespers will be performed in the Katholikon of the Holy Monastery of Hosios Loukas. Subsequently, a Memorial Service will be performed before the bust of the National Martyr Bishop Isaiah of Salona, wreaths will be laid and the national anthem will be chanted.

A public lecture by Mr Pavlopoulos will follow on the subject of “The creation of the Modern Greek State and its international repercussions”.
The Choir of the Holy Metropolitanate of Phthiotis will present traditional songs.

 

In all the events all the measures stipulated for the protection from the Covid-19 pandemic are observed.
