In cooperation with the UNESCO Centre of the Ionian Sea and with the support of local bodies such as the Region of the Ionian Isles, the Municipality of Central Corfu, the Ionian University, the Regional Directorate of Education of the Ionian Isles, the Flanghineion Cultural Centre and the Association of the Choirs of Corfu, the Holy Metropolitanate of Kerkyra organised four events dedicated to the memory of the first Governor of Greece Ioannis Capodistrias the Corfiot and to the 200 years since the outset of the Revolution of 1821. All events were held in the Holy Monastery of Platytera, where the tomb of the late Governor is found.

The central event was a solemn Memorial Service held in the morning of Monday, September 27, 2021, with Most Rev. Metropolitan Nektarios of Kerkyra, Paxoi and the Isles Beyond Sea officiating and the flagbearer pupils of the local schools participating. Most Rev. Nektarios emphasised that Governor Capodistrias bequeathed an example of patriotism and faith in God, with a vision of a truly independent Greece, and invited those younger and older to imitate him. Other dignitaries also addressed the audience.

In the afternoon of the same day an event was held on the subject of 200 years since the outset of the Revolution of 1821. The Most Rev. Metropolitan opened the event by urging the audience to remember that the struggle of 1821 took place for a free Greece, founded on faith and love of the fatherland, while its fighters gave their lives so that we modern Greeks may stand on our own feet, without relinquishing our tradition but by relying on it. Corfu is proud of its child, and we should all honour his memory, fighting on the path he showed. This should be the prospect of Hellenism. With models such as Capodistrias we ought to preserve our freedom in a world that ties us down through rejection of patriotism and faith in God.

Subsequently, a round-table discussion took place, with the participation of Greek academics, clergymen, and representatives of political and local government authorities.

In the afternoon of Sunday, September 2, 2021, a round-table discussion was organised on the subject “Honouring Ioannis Capodistrias in practice” with the participation of eminent artists, academics, and scientists. Within the context of the event, an Ode to Ioannis Capodistrias was performed by a quintet of brass instruments, composed by Spyros Rouvas on verses by Ghiorgos Sklavounos, and sung by Andreas Goussis.

On September 15, 2021, one more event took place on the subject “Capodistrias as a personality, as a moral and spiritual entity” with Ghiorgos Sklavounos as keynote speaker and a presentation of the Ode to Capodistrias by the same artists except for the singer, who on this occasion was Pantelis Kontos.

Finally, in the Archontariki of the Monastery an exhibition was organised on the subject of “The gaze of the Fight (Ioannis Capodistrias)” with works by modern Corfiots dedicated to the great Greek, curated by Ms Maria Melenti.
